arlu studio is a children’s clothing brand.
and precisely because our world is built around childhood, we have decided to no longer use real children as the face of our brand.
instead, we have chosen to explore something new: using artificial intelligence to create part of the visual world of arlu studio.
this is not simply an aesthetic decision. it is a reflection on the relationship between fashion, childhood, imagery and technology.
childhood shouldn’t automatically become content
we have become used to photographing everything.
moments, people, places. and especially children.
but an image shared online can exist for much longer than the moment in which it was taken. when that image becomes part of a brand’s communication, it also becomes commercial content, potentially seen by thousands of people and remaining online for years.
a very young child cannot fully understand what it means to have their face associated with a brand, where that image might appear or how it may continue to be used over time.
so we started with a simple question:
can we create a brand entirely dedicated to childhood without turning childhood itself into content?
for us, today, the answer is yes.
why we use artificial intelligence
artificial intelligence is changing the way imagery, fashion and creativity come together.
we have chosen to use it as a creative tool.
through ai-generated and digitally developed imagery, we can show arlu studio clothing, communicate the fit of a garment, create an atmosphere and imagine an entire editorial world without making a real child’s identity a permanent part of our commercial image.
for us, ai does not replace creativity.
it is a tool in the hands of creative direction.
every image still begins with human decisions: the garment, its proportions, the fit, the styling, the light, the movement, the composition and, most importantly, the story we want to tell.
technology simply allows us to build that world differently.
digital children, real clothes
this distinction matters to us.
the children within the visual world of arlu studio may be digital.
our clothes are not.
behind every piece there are real materials, samples, fittings, mistakes, adjustments and decisions.
there is the search for a particular softness. the weight of a knit. the length of a sleeve. the placement of a detail. the volume of an oversized silhouette.
there is merino wool, cashmere and carefully selected fabrics that we choose first of all by touching them.
artificial intelligence changes the way we choose to communicate this world. it does not replace the product we are communicating.
when an image has a more technical purpose — showing a detail, a texture, a proportion or the way a garment fits — our aim remains to represent the actual piece as faithfully as possible.
a different way to imagine kidswear
for decades, children’s fashion and kidswear imagery has almost inevitably been built around photographs of real children.
today, new tools exist.
and that gives us the opportunity to ask not only what we can create, but what we want to create.
artificial intelligence gives us enormous creative freedom. we can imagine campaigns, environments and editorials while building a distinctive visual language without tying the identity of arlu studio to the face of a real child.
most importantly, it allows us to separate two things that once seemed almost inseparable:
telling stories about childhood and putting childhood on display.
can technology make a brand more human?
it sounds like a contradiction.
we have introduced more technology into our communication to protect something deeply human.
childhood.
arlu studio was born within a family, and we continue to look at clothing from the perspective of people who live alongside children every day.
we know how spontaneous, unpredictable and beautifully unaware of other people’s gaze they can be.
that is precisely what we want to preserve.
we want children to be able to simply be children, even when nobody is photographing them.
transparency comes first
choosing to create imagery with artificial intelligence also comes with a new responsibility.
transparency.
we do not want to pretend that digitally created imagery is traditional photography. ai is part of the creative process at arlu studio, and we believe in talking about that openly.
we also know that this technology will continue to evolve, and that the questions surrounding authenticity, representation and responsibility will evolve with it.
we do not have every answer.
but we do have a principle to begin with: to use technology consciously, without losing sight of the people we are designing for.
a choice, not a rule
this is arlu studio’s choice.
it is not a judgement on children’s clothing brands that work with young models, nor on families who consciously choose to take part in photoshoots and campaigns.
there are many thoughtful and respectful ways to work with children.
we have simply found the one that feels closest to who we are today.
arlu studio will continue to tell stories about childhood through soft volumes, tactile materials, clothes made for movement and pieces special enough to keep and pass on.
the imagery may be created with artificial intelligence.
the ideas will remain ours.
the clothes will remain real.
and children can simply remain children.
because arlu studio is made for real children. we simply don’t need to make them the image of our brand to tell our story.
